Secrets In The Shadows

Chapter 3: A Deadly Discovery

The next morning, Jenna woke up early and decided to explore the town of Ravenswood. She wandered through the streets, taking in the sights and sounds of the small town. As she walked, she couldn't help but feel like she was being watched, as if someone was following her.

Jenna decided to head back home for breakfast, hoping to find some clues about the missing pages of her grandfather's journal. As she searched the room where she had found the journal, she noticed a small hidden compartment in the nightstand drawer. Inside, she found a faded photograph of a young woman and a newspaper article about a murder that had taken place in the town over thirty years ago.

The article described how a young woman had been found dead in the woods just outside of town. The police had never been able to solve the case, and the killer had never been found. Jenna felt a chill run down her spine as she read the article. Was this what her grandfather had been hiding?

Suddenly, she heard footsteps coming up the stairs. She quickly hid the photograph and article in her pocket and pretended to be looking at the journal again. Her heart raced as the footsteps approached her room, but when the door opened, it was only her mother.

"Good morning, Jenna," her mother said cheerfully. "Are you ready for breakfast?"

Jenna nodded, still feeling shaken from her discovery. There was something sinister going on in Ravenswood.

Then again it may just be a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of thing, bad things everywhere, right?

As they sat down to eat, Jenna noticed that the other guests at the breakfast seemed just as uneasy as she was. They spoke in hushed tones and cast nervous glances around the room.

After breakfast, Jenna decided to take a walk in the woods outside of town. As she wandered through the trees, she stumbled upon a clearing where a small cabin stood. The door was slightly ajar, and Jenna couldn't resist the urge to take a look inside.

As she stepped inside, her heart sank. The cabin was filled with old newspaper clippings and photographs, all related to the murder that had taken place in Ravenswood years ago. On the wall was a map of the town, with several locations marked in red.

Jenna knew she had stumbled upon something big. Something dangerous. She had the instinct that this ‘thing’ that started 30 years ago isn’t over yet. She had to find out who was behind this and what they were planning next.

Chapter 4: A Close Call

Jenna's heart raced as she stared at the map on the wall of the cabin, wondering what the red marks could mean. She snapped a quick photo with her phone before turning to leave, but as she did, she heard footsteps approaching the cabin.

Panicking, Jenna quickly hid behind a stack of crates in the corner of the room. She heard the door open and the sound of footsteps crossing the cabin's creaky floorboards. Jenna's heart was pounding in her chest as she struggled to control her breathing.

"Who's there?" a voice boomed out, and Jenna recognized it as the gruff voice of one of the guests at the bed and breakfast.

She realized that she had been followed and that her discovery was not as secret as she had hoped. She quickly racked her brain for a plan and decided that the best course of action was to make a run for it.

Jenna waited until the footsteps moved away from her hiding spot, then bolted out of the cabin and into the woods. She could hear the person behind her, their footsteps pounding the ground, and Jenna knew she had to keep moving.

She ran faster than she ever had before, her heart pounding in her chest. As she broke through the trees, Jenna stumbled and fell to the ground, the wind knocked out of her. She turned to face her pursuer, ready to defend herself, but it was only the former house owner, Mrs. Caldwell.

"Jenna, are you okay?" Mrs. Caldwell asked concern etched on her face.

Jenna nodded, relieved to see a friendly face. "I...I was just taking a walk," she stammered, trying to catch her breath.

Mrs. Caldwell looked at her quizzically. "In these woods? You shouldn't be out here alone. It's not safe."

Jenna knew that Mrs. Caldwell was right. She had stumbled upon something dangerous, and she needed to be careful. She thanked Mrs. Caldwell and made her way back to the bed and breakfast, determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.

As she lay in bed that night, Jenna's mind raced with thoughts of the map and the red marks. She knew she had to figure out what they meant and who was behind them, but she also knew that she was in over her head.

Jenna closed her eyes, vowing to be more careful from now on. She couldn't let her curiosity get the best of her, not if it meant putting her life in danger.

To be continued...
